I cannot begin to describe the energy it takes to pretend, every single day, that I don’t still miss you.
If you’re on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter you can’t escape all those happy, inspirational, sunshiny banners with quotes about love. And if you’re feeling a bit heartbroken and broken in general, it’s probably fair to say that such images can drive you batshit crazy.
That’s why I dig everything about this amazing Abandoned Love art series, by artist Peyton Fulford. She asked people to submit their most private thoughts to her Tumblr page and found that so many were about love. However, she wanted to get away from the happy, celebratory banners that are always posted and do something that was a bit more raw and realistic. “I decided to use only the phrases that focused on the relationship between love and melancholy,” she explained on her website.
Fulford chose eight messages, creating banners of each one using card stock, spray paint and string. She then hung them on abandoned buildings around her hometown of Columbus, Georgia. The buildings, she felt, mirrored the sadness and distress in the quotes themselves, and that also led to the name of the series as a whole. It’s amazingly poignant – don’t you think? I love it. More on the whole series here.

If you could hang a banner with a one-liner on it about your feelings right now, what would it say?
Hey A…
Its been months we don’t even talk. We used to talk about everything, but right now we didn’t talk at all. I still remember the last we broke up, you sent me that long text saying that you still want to make friend with me, saying that you will always there to hear my story about life and anything. Saying that you’re sorry for hurting me. Saying that if we’re really made for each others, we will always have our way back into love again. Saying that you’re sorry for wasting my time. Saying that you love me enough to let me go. I felt so hurtful. I built everything, every dreams, with you by my side. How can I even picture someone else replacing your spot? How does it feel for you now? Cause its me, it still doesn’t fade even a bit. Just like a permanent mark. What you said. What you did. What we dreamed. What we planned. What we promised. It’s still crystal clear in my mind. I can’t even help my own self. I know this is destructive. But I don’t know what to do anymore. I need something to look forward to, just like what you used to gave me. I miss you like hell. Can’t even type, my tears are filling my eyes…
I have started to realise what makes me so angry now. Not often but sometimes. It’s that I knew for a long time deep down that you didn’t love me enough, that our relationship wasn’t to you what it was to me. So instead of being brave enough to leave you for myself, I buried myself in love for you and your kids. I hoped that you would one day walk in the door a different person and ask me to marry you or something, and it makes me squirm to realise that I had so convincingly deluded myself. So that’s my fault. Staying and trying to force love and commitment out of you was a disaster and that’s my fault. It doesn’t stop me missing you though. Standing in our house with my eyes closed imaginging the sounds of your children and you. I love those kids and for the rest of my life that is something I will not get over, even though I know I will get over you.
We were together just shy of 9 years. There have been some good times and then most often bad/horrible times. I did truly love you and we had our lives planned out. We had purchased land and almost signed for a house to be built. I was consumed by you and your family, I had no life of my own. I fell into depression, but you didn’t care, coz it was all my fault. You never once asked how I was feeling, it was always about you.
Then I finally had the guts to stand up for myself and stop letting you walk all over me. That’s when you really became nasty, hateful and narcissistic. I realised that I really don’t deserve to be treated the way you have treated me for the past 9 years.
Thanks for dropping off my stuff in my mailbox. To tell you the truth, seeing that you had done so made me a little sad. That stuff of mine you had, I realize, was the last tie that we had to each other. After that, all the ties between us have been severed. Just like in the Gotye song, now we both can move into that category of “somebody we used to know.”
I know I haven’t been in touch. If you want to know the truth, it was my pride that kept me from contacting you and showing you how much it hurt me when we broke up. I know we weren’t together for that long, but it happened so suddenly and when we were seemingly so happy with each other, that I was left shocked and heartbroken for weeks afterwards.
So…when I met you I fell madly and deeply in love with you, nothing new there on my part. We lived, we danced we shared…but little did I realize at the time, was that every moment that was real for me meant little to you. I was the trophy on your arm and you were the man I looked up to. You walked, I followed and soon I began to be the shadow that followed you instead of the light that led you. You put me on your pedestal from day one, and whilst in the early days I thought we bounced off each other and on the outside we looked like the perfect couple, you were not there for me when the honeymoon period ended. I could never continue to be propped up on the pedestal you put me on, that was never me and that is something I will never become.
Dear Ricky
I just wanted to start this letter with a big F you.
I wish I told you that after you broke it off the night before my exam. I wish I told you that the week before when you stopped talking to me.
You messed me around for six months before anything actually happened and when it finally did you dropped me for some other bitch. It hurt and you were a douche, a complete and utter douche.
Hi Rochelle,
When I first called you and you asked to meet up after finding your number on some website which I won’t name, I should have said no. I shouldn’t have even called the number. I was taken. But most importantly, you told me to dump her for you, that was where I messed up, and should have said no, despite us being in better circumstances to keep up a relationship. We went out for 6 months, and it was fun, you gave me moments to this day I still think of, but what you did in the end, changed me forever. For that I thank you. Looking back now, you needed help, not a lover. Your troubled behaviour, passed on to me as we ended and you turned me into that. I don’t know how much brain you had in you when I told you I’m dumping you because you couldn’t talk to me normally anymore because of your newly adapted addiction to illegal substances.
Dear Vince
You broke my heart and thought you could get back with me after and when I finally moved on, this is when you tell me you love me. HELL NO!!!
You are trapped in your shitty life and I am so glad I am not part of it anymore. Keep partying and taking drugs to deal with your life and hanging around 24 year old sluts.
Wish you well
